How to Season Cast Iron Cookware?

  • Paper towels or a clean cloth
  • Aluminum foil (for the oven)

  1. Remove Old Seasoning: If your cast iron has old seasoning or rust, you may need to strip it down. Use a stiff brush or non-metal scrubber with warm water and a bit of mild dish soap. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
  2. Inspect for Rust: If you notice rust, scrub it off using steel wool or a rust eraser, then rinse and dry the cookware thoroughly.

 

Step 3: Apply Oil

  1. Choose the Right Oil: Select an oil with a high smoke point. Flaxseed oil is often recommended for its ability to create a durable seasoning layer, but canola or grapeseed oil works well too.
  2. Apply a Thin Layer: Using a paper towel or cloth, apply a thin layer of oil to the entire surface of the cookware, including the exterior and handle. Make sure to wipe off any excess oil; a thin layer is key to successful seasoning.

 

Step 4: Preheat the Oven

  • Set Your Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). This temperature is ideal for the oil to polymerize and bond to the cast iron.

  1. Inversion: Place the cast iron cookware upside down on the middle rack of the oven. This prevents oil from pooling inside the cookware. You can place a sheet of aluminum foil on the lower rack to catch any drips.
  2. Bake: Bake for about one hour. This allows the oil to bond with the cast iron, creating a strong, protective layer.

 

Step 6: Cool Down

  1. Turn Off the Oven: After an hour, turn off the oven and let the cookware cool inside. This gradual cooling process helps prevent cracking.
  2. Remove and Store: Once cool, remove the cookware and store it in a dry place. Consider placing a paper towel inside to absorb any moisture.
